Winter takes a toll on your car. Now is the time to make sure your car is road-ready for Spring so you can drive safely into the season.

Take your car in for a tire check. Have your tires rotated and the air pressure checked. Doing these things will make your tires last longer and ensure they’ll grip on rain slicked roads.

Replace your wiper blades. Winter can be tough on your wipers. Spring rain showers are coming and you want to be ready.

Ensure your car’s brakes are checked. Do you hear a grinding sound when you step on the brakes? Does your brake pedal feel spongy? These are all signs that you may need brakes.

Change your car’s oil. Changing the oil regularly will ensure your engine performs well and lasts longer. That means less chance of a breakdown.

Check all of your fluids. Multiple fluids are needed for your car to function properly. Many people don’t realize their car’s fluids are low or dirty until the fluid fails and the car is damaged. It is always a good idea to check the power steering, brake, and transmission fluid. You should also check your coolant and windshield washer solvent.

1. Check your tires before a winter road trip. It’s critical that tires are at the right inflation pressure and structurally intact. Do not ignore alerts from your vehicle’s tire pressure monitoring system. If you’ve been putting off a new set of tires, now is the time.

2. Have your trusted shop look over your vehicle. You should always check the following items before a trip:

- Antifreeze/Coolant

- Wipers

- Heater

- Defroster

3. Make sure you have winter tools in your car. Pack your ice scraper, booster cables, road flares and a pair of gloves.

Today at First Landing AutoCare we’re going to talk about windshield wiper blades. Now that may seem like a pretty mundane topic, but think about how important your vision is: We protect our eyes. If we need contacts or glasses, we take care of them too. And, well, wiper blades are critical to our vision when we drive around the Virginia Beach area.

We really ought to think about wipers as part of an important safety system. We should think about maintaining safety – not just responding when our wiper blades fail. How many times have you been caught off-guard in Virginia Beach by the first storm of the season with a streaky windshield you can barely see out of? Or with no washer fluid?

Wiper blades live outside the vehicle, exposed to heat and sun in the Virginia Beach summer and cold and ice in the Virginia Beach area winter. It’s no wonder that they get dry, brittle and torn.

We recommend changing wiper blades twice a year – before they’re so damaged that they don’t work. If you replace them at the same time as one of your spring and fall oil changes, you should always have wiper blades that can get the job done.

Some of us live in areas with more extreme weather and temperature conditions. You might just live somewhere where it rains more so your blades wear out faster, or you travel a lot and use your wipers to clean bugs and road grime.

Few things in life are as memorable as that new-car smell. Buying a car with better efficiency, improved performance, and high-tech features can feel like a dream from the moment you drive it off the lot, but it can’t stay in tip-top shape without your help. Here are some of the most essential vehicle maintenance items you should perform on a regular basis.

Oil Change

It’s common knowledge that oil is your car’s life blood. Automotive oil is required to keep your engine and all its working parts running smoothly, and it must be changed every so often to remove contaminants and boost the engine’s lubrication.

Unlike older vehicles that required an oil change every three months, modern cars can go anywhere from 5,000 to 10,000 miles between oil changes. How often you need to change the oil depends on your particular make and model, so be sure to check the owner’s manual and stick with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Bring your Honda to an official Honda dealership at regular service intervals to stay up-to-date on oil changes and satisfy your warranty.

Air Filter

Just like your home’s HVAC filters, your car’s air filter gets clogged over time, making it more difficult to do its job. It can be difficult to tell how often you’ll need to change the air filter since we all have different commute times, drive on different surfaces, and endure various atmospheric conditions, but a good rule of thumb is to check your air filter every 5,000 miles.

You may not need to change it at this point, since most vehicles will only need a filter change every 7,500 to 10,000 miles, but it’s best to familiarize yourself with its location so you can bring it in for servicing when needed. If you run an old clunker, however, you may need to change the filter as often as every 1,000 miles due to fumes contaminating the filter. When in doubt, ask your automotive mechanic for recommendations.

Tires

Like every vehicle component, tires come with a set life expectancy, and you’ll need to change them several times during the time you own your car. How long a set of tires lasts depends on their type, brand, and the terrain they’re exposed to on a regular basis. You may have a set that wears out at 20,000 miles, while another might last 50,000. It’s hard to judge with tires, so get in the habit of checking them regularly.

Every tire has a wear indicator to help you gauge its condition. Look between the treads for tiny ridges. When the tread wears down to these ridges, you need to buy a new set. If you have trouble locating the ridges, take a penny and place Lincoln’s head upside down between the treads. If part of his head is covered, you’re good, but if not, it’s time for new tires.
